These 4th of July projects keep children busy and help decorate for a party. Kids will enjoy making garland, candy firecrackers and festive windsocks.

While it might not rank up there with Christmas and Halloween, the 4th of July is a holiday that kids love! What’s not to adore about a summertime celebration that pays homage to breaking the rules, includes lots of yummy food and ends with fireworks? Even younger kids will have a blast getting into the spirit of Independence Day while making these craft decorations.

4th of July Paper Garland Table Décor Craft

Set the kids on this addictive activity, so that the grown-ups can spend their time getting other things ready for the party. Materials needed include:

  • Red, white and blue typing paper (construction paper will also work just fine)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Stapler and staples
  • Clear glue and silver glitter (optional)

Have the kids gut the paper into strips that are 8 and ½ inches long and about 1 and ½ inches wide. Cut as many strips as possible – the more strips, the longer the garland. Take one strip and tape or staple it into a closed loop.

Then, alternating colors, interlock a second loop with the first one. Keep going until the garland is nice and long. Kids can jazz up this project by covering the paper with glue and silver glitter before cutting the strips. Use the garland to decorate tables and chairs.

Candy Firecracker Table Decoration Crafts for a July 4th Party

Have kids make these easy candy firecrackers and put one at everybody’s place setting. Get the following materials:

  • Rolled packs of candy (Lifesavers work great), 1 for each firecracker
  • Red tape
  • Fancy blue foil toothpicks

Take the paper packaging off of each candy roll, but leave the wrapping underneath intact. Cover the roll with red tape so that it resembles a firecracker. Stick the blue foil tooth pick into one end of the roll. It will slide in easily and look like a fuze.

Red, White and Blue American Flag Wind Sock Craft

Kids will enjoy making these hand-crafted wind socks. These can be hung up all year round, but they add special patriotic pizazz to 4th of July party decor. Materials needed for this craft include:

  • One cylindrical oatmeal container per windsock
  • Blue construction paper
  • White star stickers
  • Red, white and blue crepe paper
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Stapler and staples
  • Hole punch

To make this simple party decoration, cut the bottom out of the oatmeal container and use glue to cover the entire thing with blue construction paper. Stick the white paper stars all over the blue cylinder.

Cut out the crepe paper into 14-inch strips and staple them to the bottom of the container. Punch four holes in the top of the windsock and attach string through the holes in order to hang the flag windsock.

These kid-friendly crafts are a fun, affordable way to decorate for a 4th of July party. For other Independence Day celebration ideas, please read 4th of July Dessert Recipes to Decorate a Party and The Ultimate Traditional Southern Red Velvet Cake Recipes.
